Celebrating “March is Reading Month”

Mr. Wieber, dean of students, surprises students in Kindergarten as the mystery reader.

March is officially designated as National Reading Month in the U.S., and while we love to read year-round, this season of renewal—marked by warmer days and spring cleaning—is the perfect time to dive into a new book.

At St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School, we celebrate with a shared reading experience with one book that our staff and students are reading together. This year, our school is reading The Year of Miss Agnes by Kirkpatrick Hill, a heartwarming story about a teacher who inspires her students.

Beyond our shared novel, March Is Reading Month brings exciting activities:

  • Figurative Language Fashion Show – Students get creative by selecting a figurative phrase or idiom and dressing up to represent it in a fun and expressive way.
  • Tournaments of Books – A lively reading competition that sparks enthusiasm for literature.
  • Flashlight Fridays – A cozy, fun way to enjoy a book! Students bring flashlights and read in a relaxed, dimly lit setting, making reading extra enjoyable.
  • Mystery Readers – Miss Robach’s and Mrs. Sutherland’s students have been enjoying surprise guest readers each day!  A new mystery reader—perhaps a parent, grandparent, teacher, or staff member—reads a special book, making storytime extra exciting.

From engaging activities to inspiring books, National Reading Month is a special time for our school. We hope it encourages our students to find a lifelong love of reading.
